Ringo Starr Slates 'Postcards From Paradise' Weeks Before Hall of Fame

Ringo Starr will not go quietly into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. About a month before his induction, the ex-Beatle will release his 18th solo album, Postcards From Paradise, which will contain 11 original songs.

Among them are "Island in the Sun," the first he has written with his All-Starr Band – Steve Lukather, Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, Richard Page, Wally Palmer and Gregg Bissonette – and songs featuring appearances by a number of his famous friends. "If I am recording and you're in town and drop by, you're going to be on the record," Starr said in a statement. Joe Walsh, Dave Stewart, Richard Marx, Peter Frampton and Glen Ballard, among many others, will make appearances on Postcards.

Postcards From Paradise will come out on March 31st, a couple of weeks after his North and South American tour, and weeks before his Hall of Fame induction on April 18th. The former Beatle will receive the Award for Musical Excellence.

When Rolling Stone asked Starr what the honor meant to him, he said, "It means recognition." He also said he was excited to join the company of his former bandmates. "Finally, the four of us are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame even though we were the biggest pop group in the land," he said.

He also said that he wasn't planning on performing at the event – unless Paul McCartney took the initiative to get him on the stage. "If he puts a band together, I'll do 'With A Little Help From My Friends,'" he said.

Ringo Starr, Postcards From Paradise Track List:

1. "Rory and the Hurricanes"

2. "You Bring the Party Down"

3. "Bridges"

4. "Postcards From Paradise"

5. "Right Side of the Road"

6. "Not Looking Back"

7. "Bamboula"

Tim McGraw to Step In for Glen Campbell at the Oscars

Tim McGraw has some big shoes to fill on February 22nd. The country superstar has been tapped to perform Glen Campbell's Oscar-nominated "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" at the 87th annual Academy Awards.

Campbell, a nominee for Best Original Song, is unable to attend the Oscars, as his Alzheimer's disease continues to progress. "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" is the final song of the legendary entertainer's 60-year career, written and recorded for his 2014 documentary, Glen Campbell…I'll Be Me, which just recently received a Critics' Choice nomination. (Watch the scene from the film featuring the song below.) The nominated track, co-written with Julian Raymond, is a bittersweet love song that gives a silver lining to the memory loss that comes with Alzheimer's. Raymond tells Rolling Stone Country his elation at the nomination is accompanied by sadness that Campbell isn't able to comprehend the honor.

"It's a cliché thing to say, but I'm just so happy to be nominated, for him and his family," says the songwriter-producer. "I feel just so happy that this whole thing is creating a brand-new legacy for him and getting some of those great old songs heard. As we joke, he's lived a thousand lifetimes. He's amazing in so many ways."

Campbell's family personally requested McGraw to perform on the icon's behalf. "Glen was always a fan of his music and Tim is sure to bring great emotional depth to the performance," his loved ones write in a statement.

This won't be McGraw's first Oscar rodeo — he's attended a handful of times to support films, including The Blind Side, but it will be his first time to perform at Hollywood's biggest annual event. Coincidentally, his wife, Faith Hill, performed on the 2000 Academy Awards, filling in for an ailing Whitney Houston.

The Academy Awards air live from Los Angeles on February 22nd at 7 p.m. ET on ABC. Neil Patrick Harris will host.

The Band Perry, Josh Turner Added to Florida Beach Concert

Tortuga Music Festival headliners Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band had better pack a bigger beach blanket. The two acts will be getting some company at the third annual festival, held April 11th and 12th on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, as the Band Perry, Josh Turner and Will Hoge have been announced as part of the lineup.

Not only a concert, but an effort to raise awareness for ocean conservation, Tortuga boasts an eclectic array of artists. Along with radio-country acts like Jake Owen, Little Big Town, David Nail and Frankie Ballard, the festival includes genre-crossers the Mavericks, rapper Colt Ford, bluegrass group Judah & the Lion and California ska-punkers Sublime (with Rome Ramirez on vocals, subbing for the late Brad Nowell). Presented with assistance from the Rock the Ocean Foundation, the event has raised more than $100,000 for ocean and marine life research.

The addition of the Band Perry, who are currently looking for new talent as part of the Grammy Amplifier contest, lends an extra dose of dramatic pop to Tortuga, while Josh Turner, with current single "Lay Low," represents trad-country and Will Hoge, who will release a new album in the spring, furthers the singer-songwriter element of the two-day blowout. Other names already announced include Sam Hunt, Maddie & Tae, the Cadillac Three, Trace Adkins and Chase Bryant.

Tickets for the Tortuga Music Festival are currently on sale.

The Band Perry Join Mark Ronson, Ziggy Marley in Finding Next 'Grammy Amplifier'

The Band Perry siblings are moonlighting as talent scouts. Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry have signed on to be curators of the third-annual Grammy Amplifier contest, alongside reggae legend Ziggy Marley and singer-songwriter Allen Stone. Sponsored by Hyundai and the Recording Academy, the online talent competition aims to find music's next big thing through performance video submissions.

The Top 25 contestants, to be determined by track plays and social media "amplifications," will be brought together for a mentorship experience, during which the Perrys, Marley and Stone will select a smaller group of finalists.

"We love discovering new music and can't wait to hear the next wave of emerging talent," the Band Perry write in an email to Rolling Stone Country.

Renowned British producer Mark Ronson will serve as the Grammy Amplifier Ambassador, selecting the final three contestants and awarding them with prizes that could act as career springboards. One winner will receive a studio recording session with a Grammy-winning producer. Another will get to shoot his or her own music video, and the third scores an opening slot for a big music tour or festival.

Aspiring artists may begin submitting videos today (January 27th) at grammyamplifier.com, where you can also watch clips of last year's mentoring sessions. The 2014 Grammy Amplifier winners were pop-rock band Bonavox, soul/R&B crooner Eyango and singer-songwriter Jessica Faith.

The Band Perry received their first Grammy nomination in 2010, for their breakthrough hit, "If I Die Young." In 2012, the sibling trio were in the elite, all-genre Best New Artist category at the Grammys. And they're up again this year for their cover of Glen Campbell's "Gentle on My Mind." The 57th annual Grammy Awards will broadcast live from Los Angeles, February 8th at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Faith No More Promise New Material on First North American Tour Since 2010

As Faith No More readies their first album since 1997's Album of the Year, the band has booked its first North American tour in five years. The trek will kick off this April in Vancouver and includes two-night residencies in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City before wrapping in Philadelphia in May.

"Here we go," bassist Bill Gould said in a statement. "First North American tour dates, some in cities we haven't played in over 17 years. We are armed with the new material and ready for whatever comes our way."

And I think there's parts that are very powerful and there's parts that have a lot of 'space.' Everything we do, with our chemistry, the way we play; it's always going to sound like us. It's just what we do, that makes us feel good. Hopefully it doesn't sound like a bunch of 50-year-old men...which we are!"

Hit Songwriter Chris Stapleton Announces Debut Solo Album 'Traveller'

Best known for writing such Number One hits as Luke Bryan's "Drink a Beer" and Josh Turner's "Your Man," Chris Stapleton has announced his debut solo album. The record, titled Traveller, will be released May 5th on Mercury Records. Stapleton gave journalists and Nashville insiders a preview of the album last night during a listening event at the recently rescued RCA Studio A on Music Row.

Sprawling 14 tracks, Traveller was produced by Dave Cobb, the producer du jour who has helped country return to its more organic roots via albums by Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell and Jamey Johnson. "I tried to track down Dave Cobb, after hearing just half of a song on the Sturgill Simpson record. I thought, 'Here's a guy that makes things sound like I like them to sound,'" Stapleton tells Rolling Stone Country. "We have a love of outlaw country things and soul music and old R&B…. We're just trying to find something that we think is cool and go with that. And not worry about catering too much. Dave is really fearless in that way, in recording, producing and playing."

Making last night's album party all the more unique — not to mention music-focused — Stapleton and Cobb recorded Traveller's final track, the bluesy "Sometimes I Cry," live in front of the assembled guests. (As the crowd filtered out, Cobb was already mixing the recording in the Studio A control room.)

Stapleton, who released the more polished single "What Are You Listening To" in 2013 to little radio play, says the album (which does not include that previous solo foray) was inspired by a soul-searching trip west with his wife.

"I lost my dad back in October 2013, and I had a single that did not do so well on the radio," he says. "I needed some head-clearing space, and my wife had the presence of mine to purchase me… an old Jeep, a 1979 Jeep Cherokee out in Phoenix. Instead of having it shipped back, we flew out there and drove it to south Florida and then home. It's a long haul back to here, which is kind of a crazy thing to do in a vehicle you aren't sure is going to make it or not. We lost an alternator along the way, but that was about it."

During the drive, Stapleton came up with the title track. "It says a lot about life and how we're all passing through it. That's where that song came from and it works on a number of levels. It's going to mean something to different people," he says.

While Stapleton acknowledges that today's country has become a bit homogenized, he says he and Cobb simply tried to challenge themselves.

"My goal is just to record the best music and make it available. As far as being homogenized, music always goes in cycles. Even if something were to drastically change, and something else became fashionable, eventually everything else would try to sound like that. It all goes like that," he says. "My goal is to be on the front end of something, instead of chasing something. There is more chance for artistry when you're pushing yourself, making yourself uncomfortable and doing something that someone else is not necessarily doing."

Kid Rock Snipes at 'Piece of Sh-t' Michael Moore

Filmmakers Michael Moore and Seth Rogen's negative comments regarding the movie American Sniper — a contender for Best Picture at the Oscars next month — have evoked a rather colorful response from self-proclaimed "American Bad Ass" Kid Rock. The musician took particular umbrage with the Bowling for Columbine director's statement that Moore's uncle was killed by a sniper in World War II and that he was raised to believe snipers were cowards.

"Fuck you Michael Moore, you’re a piece of shit and your uncle would be ashamed of you," Kid Rock wrote on his website. "Seth Rogen, your uncle probably molested you. I hope both of you catch a fist to the face soon."

He also paid his respects to the deceased Navy SEAL whose story was the basis of the movie. "God bless you Chris Kyle," he wrote. "Thank you for your service."

On the movie's opening weekend, Moore tweeted his comments and added, "Snipers aren't heroes, and invaders are worse." He later claimed that his tweet wasn't about American Sniper in particular and posted a lengthy Facebook missive to clarify his thoughts.

Regarding his own feelings about the movie, he offered, "Awesome performance from Bradley Cooper. One of the best of the year. Great editing. Costumes, hair, makeup superb!" He also praised the film's "anti-war sentiment" and its "touching" ending. Despite those compliments, he criticized the way the movie's characters call Iraqis "savages" and alleges that Clint confused Iraq for Vietnam with his movie.

Rogen sparked Kid Rock's ire by comparing the movie to the fictional Nazi propaganda film, Nation's Pride, screened within Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. He, too, backtracked on his original comments, saying American Sniper only "kinda reminded" him of the Tarantino satire and that he was not comparing them. He made no mention of an uncle.

Kid Rock is readying the release of his upcoming album, First Kiss, the title song of which has come out as a single. The LP is due out late next month.

Garage Rockers the Sonics Return With New Rager 'Bad Betty'

Decades after the release of their last album, garage rockers the Sonics are returning with a new LP, This Is the Sonics. The group, best known lately for their raucous 1965 recording of "Have Love Will Travel," heralded the news with a gritty, sax-powered single, "Bad Betty." Previously, the This Is the Sonics track appeared in a different version on a split seven-inch single with Mudhoney that came out on Record Store Day last year.

Three of the band's original members – vocalist-keyboardist Jerry Roslie, guitarist-vocalist Larry Parypa and multi-instrumentalist Rob Lind, who plays sax, harmonica and sings – recorded the new album in "earth-shaking mono" with a rhythm section that has played with the Kingsmen and Dick Dale. Producer Jim Diamond recorded the band in Seattle, less than an hour's drive from the band's hometown of Tacoma. The album is due out on March 31st.

In addition to putting out a new album, the group will be hitting the road for a North American spring headlining trek. Mudhoney will be joining them at their record release party on April 2nd at Seattle's Moore Theater, along with other as-yet-unannounced guests, and the band will receive support from Barrence Whitfield and the Savages from their New York City date until the end of the tour.

The Sonics were most active in the mid-Sixties, when they put out their influential 1965 LP Here Are the Sonics and 1966 record Boom, putting their own unique stamp on revved-up garage rock. They reunited briefly in the Seventies and, in 1980, released Sinderella. In recent years, "Have Love Will Travel" appeared in a Modelo beer commercial and in a promo for Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown. The group was also featured in the Seattle episode of Foo Fighters' HBO docu-series, Sonic Highways.

The Sonics Tour Dates:

4/2 - Seattle, WA @ Moore Theater

4/4 - Las Vegas, NV @ Viva Las Vegas Weekender

Vince Gill and Friends Tour to Feature Ashley Monroe, Charlie Worsham, Jenny Gill

Vince Gill is embarking on a mini-tour in March that will see the Country Music Hall of Famer sharing the stage with three of his favorite collaborators.

The Vince Gill & Friends Tour will feature singer-songwriters Ashley Monroe and Charlie Worsham, along with the singer's daughter, Jenny Gill, with all four artists performing together. Set for March 19th—22nd, the trek will visit Arkansas, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin, mimicking the theme of the short series of shows Gill played this month with Lyle Lovett.

"This won't be a guitar pull," the country icon explains, "where one person sings while the others listen and wait for their turn. We'll all be pitching in, picking and singing harmony for each other and doing each other's songs. It will be a musical collaboration — not a headliner with opening acts."

A 20-time Grammy winner who has been a guest artist on nearly 1,000 albums by other performers in almost every musical genre, Gill is currently producing the follow-up to Monroe's Like a Rose, which earned a spot on nearly every "best-of" list in 2013. The angelic-voiced singer is currently in the Top Ten with "Lonely Tonight," her duet with Blake Shelton. Worsham, a multifaceted musician who has opened shows for Taylor Swift and shared the stage with Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves, also earned raves for his 2013 debut LP, Rubberband. Acclaimed vocalist and songwriter Jenny Gill had recorded a debut album produced by her dad, but the LP was on hold pending the arrival of her first child, born last August. No word yet on when the disc will be released.

Vince Gill & Friends tour dates:

March 19th — El Dorado, Arkansas

March 20th — St. Louis, Missouri

March 21st — Cincinnati, Ohio

March 22nd — Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Martina McBride to Receive Humanitarian Award

Throughout her career as one of country music's most powerful vocalists, Martina McBride has routinely used her star power to spearhead various philanthropic endeavors, including the Middle Tennessee YWCA's Celebrity Auction, which benefits the organization's programs to shed light on the issue of domestic violence. On May 14th, the singer will be rewarded for her advocacy when she receives the Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award at a luncheon hosted by the non-profit Music Business Association (Music Biz) in Nashville. The mission of Music Biz is to advance and promote music commerce.

The award, named for late folk singer Harry Chapin, recognizes McBride for her efforts to end domestic violence. The singer has served as spokesperson for several organizations including the National Domestic Violence Hotline. She also founded the "My Time to Shine" program, to educate teenagers on forming healthy relationships. The singer first drew attention to the issue with her award-winning 1994 single, "Independence Day," and its powerful music video.

The honor also recognizes McBride for her alliances with other charitable organizations, including the National Network to End Domestic Violence and Kids Wish Network. McBride teamed with the latter to help fulfill the wish of a young girl who was battling Muscular Dystrophy. In 2010, she performed "Unchained Melody" during the Stand Up 2 Cancer Telethon, with Leona Lewis, Aaron Neville, and Stevie Wonder. McBride's fans, through the worldwide Team Martina, have raised more than $275,000 to help fund various projects, including a cancer research grant at Nashville's Vanderbilt University, a playground construction project in Atlanta, and a music education program for orphaned and abused girls in Guatemala.

"I believe that anyone blessed enough to achieve success has a responsibility to help those in need," McBride said in a statement. "While my goal was never to be recognized for my charitable efforts, this award is proof that we can all make a difference, no matter how small, in the lives of others."

Late last year, McBride signed with Nash Icon Records, a co-venture between Big Machine Label Group and Cumulus Media. She is currently working on her first album for the label, which is tentatively due out in the fall.

Ronnie Milsap Applauds Preservation of Nashville's Historic RCA Studios

Ronnie Milsap, who turns 71 years old today (January 16th), will celebrate with a private party at the recording studio he founded on Nashville's famed Music Row. The legendary entertainer, who recorded for RCA throughout the Seventies and Eighties, was a mainstay for those two decades at RCA recording studios, including Studio B, which is now co-owned by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and Belmont University's music business school, which carries the name of music mogul Mike Curb. The adjacent building, RCA Studio A, has recently been at the center of a preservation battle that saw the historic location nearing demolition, until Curb and two other Tennessee philanthropists stepped in to stave off the wrecking ball.

For Milsap, whose RCA hits include the country-pop classics, "It Was Almost Like a Song," "There's No Getting' Over Me" and "Stranger in My House," among dozens of others, keeping such historic recording facilities operating is essential, if only for future generations to understand why such places are so significant.

"If you're in the studio where Elvis recorded, that ought to mean something," Milsap tells Rolling Stone Country. "The records that he recorded when he finally got to Nashville, it's amazing how good they are. When the Jordanaires kick in, Elvis' whole attitude changes. He finally gets the spark of magic that he's looking for. They kept all the outtakes of Elvis at Studio B. He's singing 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and saying, 'Let me see if I can struggle through this.' That's right there on your outtakes. [Laughs] We don't have outtakes anymore with all this multi-track stuff."

Another of the key factors to the magic that was created at RCA's Nashville studios was singer and arranger Anita Kerr, whose Anita Kerr Singers were heard on dozens, if not hundreds of recordings beginning in the late 1950s.

"She saw so much go down at RCA Studio B," Milsap says. "She recorded on all the great records and she arranged the strings for so many great records. I suspect that she was really the producer on 'The End of the World,' by Skeeter Davis. I can't prove it until I talk to her, but I predict that was produced by Anita Kerr, with Chet Atkins' name on it. Watching Chet, I know she knew how to produce records."

In November of last year, a treasure trove of Milsap (and RCA) recordings was released as a boxed set. Boasting 21 of the singer's albums for the label, the staggering RCA Albums Collection includes several of Milsap's LPs which have never been available on CD before, including Out Where the Bright Lights Are Glowing, the 1981 tribute to one of Milsap's greatest inspirations, country-pop pioneer Jim Reeves. The album features "Am I Losing You," a Number Three hit for Reeves in 1957 and a Number One for Milsap in 1981.

"That's a favorite of mine," Milsap says fondly. "I was a true fan of Jim Reeves and I knew a lot of his songs. The closing song [written specifically for the LP], "Dear Friend," says how I felt about Jim Reeves. Chet Atkins wrote the liner notes for it. I used to ask Chet all the time, 'What did Jim Reeves do in the studio?' He said, 'Well, he liked to sing very close to the mic and the engineers would always ask him to back up. One day he kept getting close to the mic and there was nobody to tell them to stop. The engineer that had said that had passed on. From then on, he worked the mic like he always did.'"

Like Jim Reeves, Ronnie Milsap is now a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. A new exhibit spotlighting Milsap's career is due to open at the downtown Nashville museum on February 6th.

Hear the 'Delicately Crafted' Sex Anthems That Won Pornhub's Song Contest

The fledgling label Pornhub Records – run by the self-proclaimed Number One porn site in the world – has named two new songs as the "official anthems" of the site. Last year, the company launched a contest to find the "ultimate" Pornhub theme song, and a judging panel that included T-Pain and producer Scott Storch sifted through a reported thousands of submissions. Now it's rewarding the winners – Jordan Royale and Mihannah Zhang – with $5,000 to make videos for their songs.

Royale's winning tune, "Pornhub Anthem," is a fusion of quasi-trappy rap and EDM with lyrics like, "I love watching porn when I have a bad day/It's like jerking off flushes all the pain away." The chorus goes, "Pornhub, it's all day/it's every day, all day."

Zhang's winning song, "You Make Me Feel Like," is more like a loose rock song as she sings lyrics like, "You make me feel like [gasps and moans]." The song's transitions go, "Pornhub-3-4!" as the singer offers, "I know you want me dancing this way/You know I want you dancing that way," essentially suggesting where she'll take the video.

"We received thousands of submissions from around the world – fledgling rockers to upstart rappers to budding DJs and everything in between," Pornhub VP Corey Price tells Rolling Stone. "We wanted an artist to evoke an emotive response representative of the Pornhub brand from listeners. Both Jordan and Mihannah did just that. They took the personality of our brand and delicately crafted it, embodying exactly what we're looking for in an official anthem. Here at Pornhub Records we're all about star quality, and without further ado we'd like to introduce the world to Jordan Royale and Mihannah Zhang."

Now that the winners have been announced, they are expected to use their award money to make respective videos for their songs that will on the site. Pornhub is guaranteeing them 500,000 views each.

Pornhub Records launched last September, when it released a single by Coolio, "Take It to the Hub." The rapper made an NSFW video for the song, where it has logged more than one million views so far.

Although Coolio recorded his Pornhub song, he is not on the label, which has yet to announce any official signings. As previously reported, winning the contest did not guarantee a record deal.

Gladys Knight, Martina McBride, Estelle Harmonize on 'Skyville Live'

Nashville lived up to its Music City nickname Wednesday night with the launch of Skyville Live, an online music series that got off to an auspicious start with the legendary Gladys Knight, country icon Martina McBride and British pop/R&B hitmaker Estelle. Broadcast on skyvillelive.com, the concert featured the three women delivering some of their biggest hits solo, as well as performing together, sharing such classics as Knight's "Midnight Train to Georgia."

"I was freaking out a little bit," McBride told Rolling Stone Country after rehearsing the song with her co-stars. "It's a 'pinch me' moment for sure. I've always loved 'Midnight Train to Georgia.' I've always loved everything that Gladys did, but that song means a lot to me because my 20-year-old daughter, Delaney, used to perform that song when she was three. She was so into it and knew all the background vocal parts. When I told her I was going to do it, she said, 'Are you kidding?!'"

Estelle previewed the title track to her fourth album, Conqueror, due February 17th, as well as the brand-new "Something Good" and her huge, breakout hit, "American Boy." "I'm learning so much. I'm being a sponge," she told us of collaborating with Knight and McBride on Skyville Live. "As an artist, there's nothing more you can wish for. I'm sitting in a room with legends. I'm going to watch and learn. I want to be here for many years. I want to still be doing music and be as open and as joyful about the music I do. This is what I love."

Knight was also reveling in the sense of camaraderie. "I love it. They do music, and that makes us family," she said. "It doesn't matter where you come from. It doesn't matter what kind of songs people say you sing — it still touches the heart, and that's what music is all about. It's universal. So the fact that we're all doing this together makes my heart feel good."

Knight was at her usual pitch-perfect best, belting such hits as "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" and the Grammy-winning "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)." Before performing "Midnight Train to Georgia" with McBride and Estelle, Knight introduced legendary songwriter Jim Weatherly in the audience and shared the story of how the song was originally titled "Midnight Plane to Houston," before she and the Pips asked Weatherly if they could move it east. He agreed, and the rest is history.

McBride followed suit with some classic hits of her own, including "Broken Wing," and with soul and R&B favorites covered on her Everlasting album, including Etta James' "In the Basement," Van Morrison's "Wild Night" and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Know Me by Now." Knight and Estelle joined her on Aretha Franklin's "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man."

Skyville Live was created by music industry veteran Wally Wilson. "There have been many great concerts streamed on the net," said Wilson, who serves as the show's executive producer, "but to my knowledge, there has never been a network-quality program featuring major artists that has appeared on the Internet first. Now, at the dawn of the era of 'smart TV,' Skyville Live has come along to change that."

The three ladies who kicked off the inaugural event are happy to be part of such an innovative venture. "It's a new day. It's a new field and I'd rather be on the cutting edge of it," Estelle said. "I like to be first."

"If you're gonna stay around here, you're gonna have to be flexible enough to change," Knight echoed. "You can't stay in your little hole and not make things happen. That's' what I love about this [show]. It's another avenue for us to speak to, touch and sing to people, and that's what it's all about. They said, 'We're gonna do this on the Internet' and I said, 'Come on! Put me on it!'"

McBride hopes Skyville Live will offer artists a new avenue for reaching fans. "We'll be able to reach people in their homes in a different and more personal way, because people can sit around in their pajamas and watch wherever they want."

Knight hopes the program is as memorable for viewers as it is for the participants. "There's a wonderful spirit on this show," she said. "I've been on at least a thousand shows and at times the spirit of the shows doesn't come together. The spirit in this show is so beautiful and so warm. We don't compete. We perform together and support each other, and I'm having a ball."

On the Charts: Taylor Swift's '1989' Is Becoming This Year's 'Frozen'

TAYLOR WINS AGAIN: A year ago, all I could write about was the dominance of the Frozen soundtrack. It was selling hundreds of thousands of copies per week and every other would-be hit, in the desolate January weeks, showed up and dropped hard from the charts. That's true in early 2015 of Taylor Swift's 1989 — it's on week nine at Number One, since last week it sold 111,000 copies and 155,000 "units," the new Billboard formula including sales, streaming and track-equivalent albums. The album's sales drop this week is by 55 percent, but it's almost up to 4 million copies sold, which is incredible in an era when only two 2014 albums sold more than 2 million.

IT'LL PROBABLY BLOW UP WHEN PITBULL IS ON EVERY SUPER BOWL AD: Could the big early 2015 single be Pitbull's "Time of Our Lives," which came out on Christmas Day and has racked up nearly 11 million YouTube views? The rent-party anthem, featuring Ne-Yo on vocals and Pit rapping in a tuxedo, jumped 57 spots, to Number 33, on BigChampagne's Ultimate Chart, which measures Internet criteria and often predicts future hits. It has 9.8 million Spotify streams at the moment, which is tiny compared to the 257 million for "Timber," but every hit single has to start somewhere.

CRITICS — CAN'T LIVE WITH 'EM, CAN'T TIE 'EM TO THE FRONT BUMPER: Funny how the year's biggest-selling albums differ from the most critically acclaimed albums. Taylor Swift's 1989 sold 3.6 million copies in 2014, making it Number One, barely beating out the previous year's Frozen soundtrack, but it hit just Number Seven on the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll. The top three: D'Angelo's Black Messiah, Run the Jewels' Run the Jewels 2 and the War on Drugs' Lost in the Dream, none of which had much chart action in 2014. Swift scored two singles in the poll, "Blank Space" (Three) and "Shake It Off" (Four), but the top slots went to Future Islands' "Seasons (Waiting on You)" and FKA Twigs' "Two Weeks."

Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers Team for Long-Awaited 'Hold My Beer' Album

Individually, Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers front of two of the most in-demand acts in Texas. But their stripped-down, collaborative Hold My Beer and Watch This tour dates have filled smaller venues for the past seven years and have also fueled great interest in a much-talked-about album from the pair. That collaborative project, Hold My Beer, will finally come to fruition on April 26th. (See the complete track listing below.)

Rogers first met Bowen in San Marcos, Texas, in 2002, and the two became fast friends. But the experience of penning material for the two of them to sing together wasn't without a hurdle or two.

"It's always different when you're attempting to write a song for two guys, versus just sitting down and writing a good song," Bowen told Rolling Stone Country last summer. "It's a challenge, but it's a challenge we've brought on ourselves and we're excited."

Hold My Beer is now available for pre-order via Bandcamp, with an immediate download of three tracks, including two bonus acoustic tunes recorded live during Hold My Beer and Watch This Tour gigs, and the honky-tonk number "Good Luck With That."

"We both like the idea of showing loyalty to the venues we played when we were getting started and for the people who supported us during that time," Rogers told the Dallas Observer last year of the back-to-their-roots tour. "Our bands have outgrown the venues we played back then, so this is a great chance for us to play in rooms like Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, where I first started. It helps us to stay grounded and true in that sense."

Wade Bowen made his national TV debut this week, performing "When I Woke Up Today," from his recently released self-titled album, on Conan. Watch the clip below.

Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers' Hold My Beer track listing:

1. "In the Next Life"

2. "I Had My Hopes Up High"

3. "'Til It Does"

4. "Good Luck With That"

5. "It's Been a Great Afternoon"

6. "I've Got Standards"

7. "El Dorado"

8. "Hangin' Out in Bars"

9. "Lady Bug"

10. "Reasons to Quit"

11. "Lost & Found" (acoustic bonus track)

12. "Trouble" (acoustic bonus track)

Katy Perry Says She Did Not Pay for Super Bowl Halftime Gig

Katy Perry says that she did not pony up for the opportunity to headline a gig that is annually the world's most-watched concert, the Super Bowl halftime show. "I put my foot down very early in the courtship," she told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "I said, 'Look guys, here's where I draw a line in the sand.' I want to be invited on my own merits and not with some fine print."

The pop singer went on to say that she remained adamant to her position during negotiations. "I don't even care if my contract leaks," she said. "I have nothing to hide, basically."

Perry, who said her performance would last 12 minutes and comprise two different "worlds," also described herself as the perfect halftime performer in the interview. "I'm all about female empowerment and uplifting people's spirits, and people finding their own voice with songs like 'Roar' and 'Firework,' so maybe there is no better person [for the show]," she said. "Hopefully I can bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance."

The Super Bowl will take place on February 1st at Glendale, Arizona's University of Phoenix Stadium.

Last summer, news broke that the NFL had reportedly approached Perry, Rihanna and Coldplay – their top choices for this year's halftime show – and asked them for a portion of their post-game tour earnings or some other form of payment for Super Bowl exposure. Last year's halftime show, which featured Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers and a heap of post-show controversy, was seen by 115.3 million viewers. Mars went on to gross $43 million in tour revenue by mid-2014. Similarly, Beyoncé – who performed during the 2013 halftime show – went on to make nearly $180 million from touring that year.

When Rolling Stone approached the agents for superstar artists last summer to weigh in on the NFL's pay-for-play concept (a rep for Perry did not return a request for comment), they scoffed at the notion. "Is Paul McCartney going to pay?" Dennis Arfa, who reps Metallica, Billy Joel and Rush, said. "I doubt it."

"We've ruled out Janet Jackson," an NFL spokesperson joked to Rolling Stone, referring to "nipplegate," at the time. They had not yet confirmed Perry. (During her Associated Press interview, the "Roar" singer downplayed any censor-baiting salaciousness: "My intention is that everyone talks about the music and nothing else.")

The "Firework" singer confirmed the gig last October. Prior to the booking, Perry joked with ESPN's College GameDay about the pay-for-play scheme. "I have let them know that I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl," she said. "The ball is in their field."

Earlier this month, Perry raised the profile of her appearance by announcing Lenny Kravitz as a guest performer, calling him an "incredible rock & roll icon, a guitar god," on the Today Show. She added, "He's the coolest!" Perry's recent AP article mentioned "guests," so another announcement is likely to arrive soon.

Tim McGraw Reveals Cities, Opening Acts on Shotgun Rider Tour 2015

For country superstar Tim McGraw, this summer will bring two major life events: his eldest daughter will graduate from high school, and he'll embark on a massive North American run, the Shotgun Rider Tour 2015. Alongside supporting acts Billy Currington and Chase Bryant, McGraw will hit cities from Wantagh, New York (presumably beachside venue Jones Beach) to Irvine, California, hitting various amphitheaters, arenas and festivals along the way.

McGraw is still riding high with "Shotgun Rider" at the top of the country charts for the fourth week in a row, and his newest single, "Diamond Rings and Old Barstools," released to radio last week. (See him perform the ballad with Catherine Dunn below.) For the singer, picking favorites from Sundown Heaven Town was rather easy — mostly because he felt pretty amorous about every last one.

"When I turned the record in," McGraw tells Rolling Stone Country, "I told [label head] Scott Borchetta that, out of all 18 songs, I didn't care which one we put out, because I like them all that much. When you hear songs that move you that much, you want other people to hear them."

Another poignant track — "Meanwhile Back at Mama's," a duet with wife Faith Hill, will have the couple traveling to Los Angeles for the Grammy Awards on February 8th, where they're up for two awards. As much as they love performing together, McGraw insists it's the music, not their marital connection, that dictates when they collaborate. "We make the song motivate the singing together, instead of the singing together motivating the song," he says.

Aside from the release of his sci-fi film Tomorrowland, due this spring, McGraw will be cherishing the time in Nashville with his daughter until they both hit the road. "I have a little bit of downtime because it's my daughter's senior year, so I wanted to be home as much as possible," he says. "Of course you hate for them to leave, but, at the same time, you are excited to see what lies ahead of them, and for them to get out into the world." Based on the breadth of the Shotgun Rider Tour, he's clearly ready to do the same.

Darius Rucker Announces 'Southern Style' Album and Tour

Darius Rucker's return visit to NBC's Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night was full of surprises. The country star not only teased his upcoming Southern Style Tour, he also took the opportunity to reveal that his fourth solo studio album, which shares its name with the tour, will be released March 31st.

The arena-headlining Southern Style Tour, which is set to launch May 14th in Holmdel, New Jersey, will include an initial 30 stops and features CMA New Artist of the Year Brett Eldredge, as well as hot new country duo Brothers Osborne and Southern rockers A Thousand Horses. Tickets for the three-time Grammy-winner's upcoming tour go on sale in select cities beginning the week of January 26th as part of Live Nation's Country Megaticket. See a list of cities on the first leg of the trek below.

The first single from Southern Style, the equally alliterative "Homegrown Honey," was released last August. Co-written by Rucker with Lady Antebellum's Charles Kelley and songwriter-producer Nathan Chapman, the tune reached Number 13 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart.

"It's a little different for me," Rucker tells Rolling Stone Country of the track. "It's not one of those family songs — it's really a country party song. It's talking about some country girl who lives in New York City. It's got hooks galore."

The new album teams the singer-songwriter once again with producer Frank Rogers, who has been at the helm of all three of his previous studio albums as a country artist. "Frank does great Darius records," Rucker raves. "I can't go in to record with the attitude that I want to sound different. It's all about the songs for me. I want great songs. And if we have great songs, then Frank is the genius and does what he does."

Foo Fighters, Beck, Zac Brown Band, Skrillex to Play Hangout Fest

With headlining performances by Foo Fighters, Zac Brown Band and Skrillex, the sixth annual Hangout Music Festival will be a particularly loud one, when it sets up camp on the beachfront of Gulf Shores, Alabama this spring. Beck, My Morning Jacket, Foster the People and Spoon are also set to perform.

In total, more than 70 artists and bands will take the fest's stages, which are set up literally in the sand of the beach and positioned around amusement-park rides, over the course of its three days. This year's fest will also feature sets by TV on the Radio, Jenny Lewis, Lupe Fiasco, Galactic with Macy Gray, Umphrey's McGee, Father John Misty, Major Lazer, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Phantogram, Drive-by Truckers and St. Lucia. The whole lineup is available on the fest's website.

This year's Hangout Music Fest will take place between May 15th and the 17th. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. CST today, January 13th.

Foo Fighters recently played their first U.S. tour date of 2015 at L.A.'s the Forum with a bevy of guests including David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmster, Kiss' Paul Stanley and many others. The group is headed to Europe next and the group's July 4th Washington, D.C. extravaganza – which will find it headlining a show with support coming from Joan Jett, LL Cool J, Heart and many others – was supposed to kick off its North American tour. Now, with its Hangout headlining slot booked, it looks as though the band will be back at it much earlier than they had originally suggested.

Garth Brooks Surpasses Elvis Presley in Album Sales... Again

With his ninth studio album, Man Against Machine, earning platinum certification, Garth Brooks once again tops the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) list as the best-selling solo album artist of all-time, moving past the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley. Brooks' tally, certified units of 135 million sold, bests Presley's current figure of 134.5 million units — figures that only take into consideration sales in the U.S.

Brooks was previously noted as the best-selling solo artist in the U.S. by the RIAA in November 2007, based solely on his album sales, which, at the time, totaled 123 million to Presley's 118.5 million. Presley fans were quick to point out that Elvis' tally did not take into account the millions of singles he sold that were never officially certified (gold, platinum or otherwise) by the RIAA.

Brooks still has a long way to go before outselling the all-time champs, however. The Beatles have sold 178 million units and remain the most-certified act in RIAA history. The Fab Four have earned 26 multi-platinum certifications from the RIAA.

Since the first platinum certifications for albums were not issued until 1976, it's safe to assume today's figures would look quite different for the Beatles, Presley – and Brooks – if album sales prior to 1976 were tallied the same as they are currently. As it is, Presley only received his very first platinum album certification, for the album Moody Blue, in September 1977, one month after his death. The Beatles' first RIAA-certified million-seller was the reissue album, Rock 'n' Roll Music, in 1976.

Regardless of whether the latest numbers tell the full story, a closer look at current figures does reveal some surprising statistics. Six of Brooks' catalog albums, Sevens, No Fences, The Hits, Garth Brooks, Ropin' the Wind and the two-record set Double Live, have all registered sales in excess of 10 million units each, while only one of Presley's offerings, Elvis' Christmas Album, has been certified for sales of more than 10 million units. To date, Presley, has earned a total of 90 gold, 52 platinum and 25 multi-platinum certifications, while Brooks has managed a total of 21 gold and platinum and 15 multi-platinum album certifications. The Beatles have earned 48 gold, 42 platinum and 26 multi-platinum certifications.

George Strait is the next-best-selling country artist with 69 million in sales, placing him just ahead of the Rolling Stones, and one notch below AC/DC.

Rascal Flatts Tap Craig Wayne Boyd to Open Las Vegas Residency Shows

Craig Wayne Boyd, who shot to country stardom as the winner of NBC's The Voice last month, is now headed to Las Vegas to be the opening act for Rascal Flatts' "Vegas Riot!" residency at the Joint, a 4,500-seat venue inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

The nine-show run for the country supergroup and the Team Blake champ begins February 25th and wraps up on March 14th — a run of dates that mark the first ever Las Vegas club residency by a country artist. (Former Vegas showroom residencies include Garth Brooks, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, and Shania Twain.)

"I am so honored and excited to join Rascal Flatts in what will be an epic group of shows at Hard Rock Hotel," Boyd says. "It is yet another check mark on my bucket list of things that I previously only dreamed of."

A native of Mesquite, Texas, Boyd helped Shelton claim his fourth victory as a coach on the TV singing competition. He went on to rewrite country music chart history less than two weeks after being crowned the Season Seven winner, when his first single, "My Baby's Got a Smile on Her Face," became only the second single to ever debut at Number One. That feat was previously accomplished by Garth Brooks' "More Than a Memory" in 2007.

Boyd will release an album later this year via Nashville's newly revitalized Dot Records. The music company falls under the Big Machine Label Group, which has released the last three Rascal Flatts albums.

Hear 'Halloween' Director John Carpenter's Ominous New Song 'Night'

John Carpenter has long been known for creating eerie, engaging soundtracks to match his unsettling and action-packed movies like Halloween and Escape From New York. Recently, he used that approach to making an ominous, stand-alone album, Lost Themes – due out February 3rd – which serves as home to "Night," a chilly, slow-building synth-driven track that recalls his work on his action soundtracks like Assault on Precinct 13 and his Escape movies, which is now streaming.

"It's 'lost themes' in the sense that we were scoring the movies that many people have in their imaginations," Carpenter explained in a recent, career-spanning interview with Rolling Stone. "The perfect way to listen to this would be with a beautiful girl next to you — but if you can't have that, turn the lights down, start the album up and let the music sink in with the imaginary movies in your mind."

Previously, Carpenter released the track "Vortex" from the album and used the song in a preview of sorts for the album on his label's website by using clips from his filmography. When Lost Themes arrives, it will be available in a variety of formats, including colored vinyl, and the iTunes edition of the LP features remixes of Lost Themes tracks by Zola Jesus, Skinny Puppy's ohGr, Foetus' J.G. Thirlwell and others.

Around the time of the release, Carpenter will be the subject of a retrospective at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where he will discuss the album on February 5th onstage in an interview with NPR's Brooke Gladstone. Then, beginning the next day, BAM will host a selection of movies Carpenter made and films he loves as part of a program titled "John Carpenter: Master of Fear."

Regarding the creepy path his music has taken, Carpenter told Rolling Stone, "Some of the most beautiful music is the darker stuff."

Universal Sues Companies Selling Mixtapes in Prison

Universal Music Group has filed a lawsuit against two companies its lawyers claim are distributing illegal mixtapes to prisoners. The company Centric Group and its subsidiary Keefe Group both distribute products in addition to music, like food and deodorant, to correctional facilities. The label – which cites unlicensed recordings by James Brown, Eminem and Stevie Wonder, among others, in its lawsuit – is seeking $150,000 per allegedly illegally distributed song it claims the companies have distributed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Although the lawsuit acknowledges the existence of licensed mixtapes, it says they are "frequently a cover for piracy." It alleged that the companies sell the tapes through physical catalogs and the website Access Securepak to correctional facilities in at least 40 states. Centric's website also allegedly promises mixtapes by "your FAVORITE artists." It also criticized the companies' business practices, calling the distribution of allegedly illegal recordings a contradiction.

"Defendants boast on their website that their business 'was developed to eliminate contraband,' yet the infringing copies of plaintiffs' sound recordings and musical compositions, in which defendants unlawfully transact and from which they unjustly profit, are contraband personified," it says.

It also claimed that the companies were purposely underselling the product, saying they "sometimes sell their infringing products substantially below market value," in order to use mixtapes as an attractive loss-leader for other products.

The lawsuit claimed that the defendants were "fully aware" that the sale of these recordings was unlawful and that they chose to sell them anyway without regard for the label's rights. Additionally, it said that the sale of these mixtapes caused substantial and irreparable harm to Universal, which has invested millions of dollars and enormous amounts of time into creating and marketing the music.

Universal is suing the companies on counts of sound recording copyright infringement, compositional copyright infringement and other business-related complaints. The label is seeking additional damages for the non-copyright-related counts.

Reps for neither of the defendant companies have commented publically about the lawsuit.

Martina McBride, Gladys Knight Team for 'Skyville Live' Web Series

Martina McBride's soul cred keeps coming. The country singer, whose latest chart-topper is the soul/R&B covers album, Everlasting, is now finding herself sharing a bill with the Empress of Soul.

McBride and the legendary Gladys Knight will perform alongside pop/R&B chanteuse Estelle on the inaugural Skyville Live webcast, which will air live from Nashville on January 14th. The three powerhouse singers are the first guests on what producers promise to be a "network-quality program" to air once a month from Music City. Each episode will pair two iconic artists with one emerging artist, in an intimate performance before a live studio audience of about 100 and a limitless web audience.

McBride, Knight and Estelle will each sing some of their own biggest hits, harmonizing with one another on select tunes. They'll also be taking audience questions, which viewers can tweet to them using the hashtag #SkyvilleLive.

Though next week's webcast will be the first time Skyville Live goes public, the series has been around for years. It started as small local show put on by Music Row moguls Wally Wilson and Paul Worley — the owners of Skyville artist development and publishing company — to showcase their new artists. The series has become so popular over the years that it has outgrown the local watering hole serving as its venue, so they've now moved it to the Skyville studios… complete with a three-camera webcasting system.

Other artists tentatively scheduled for subsequent Skyville Live episodes include Kenny Chesney, Merle Haggard, Meghan Trainor, Kris Kristofferson, Trey Songz and Lady Antebellum. Catch the first Skyville Live broadcast on January 14th at 8p.m. ET on www.skyvillelive.com.

Listen to Reba McEntire's Empowering 'Going Out Like That'

With the release of her first new music in nearly five years, Reba McEntire confirms she is back in a big way. The Oklahoma native's latest sass-filled track, "Going Out Like That," which was released on Monday, January 5th, is already Number One on iTunes' country chart. The upbeat tune about a woman who nurses a broken heart by putting on her red dress and high heels for a night on the town, debuted this week on the nationally syndicated America's Morning Show with host Blair Garner. (Listen to "Going Out Like That" below.)

"When you listen to thousands of songs trying to find just the right one to record, a really great song jumps out at you," McEntire says of the tune penned, somewhat surprisingly, by three men: veteran songwriters Ben Hayslip, Rhett Akins and Jason Sellers. "That's exactly what 'Going Out Like That' did to me. It jumped out because it's a great song with up-tempo sassiness! The first time I heard it, a man was singing the demo. When I sang it coming from a female perspective, it became a woman's power anthem."

Produced by Tony Brown, with whom McEntire has scored numerous hits, the track is the first release from the superstar entertainer's debut album for Nash Icon Records, slated for an April release. The album will also feature the singer collaborating for the first time with veteran producer James Stroud.

A joint venture label between Big Machine Label Group and Cumulus, Nash Icon Records, for which McEntire is the flagship artist, will produce new music and live events from some of Music City's most prolific artists of the past four decades. McEntire has, in fact, been making records since 1976, when she had her first charted single on Mercury Records. To date, the singer has scored 25 Number One singles on the Billboard charts.

In June, McEntire and her longtime friends, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, will take up a musical residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Genocide and Kim Kardashian: The Bloody History Behind System of a Down's Tour

Between their spasmodic rhythms and jagged melodies, System of a Down have always been committed to a sobering cause: raising recognition for the Armenian genocide of 1915. The group's self-titled debut LP contained a song called "P.L.U.C.K.," in which frontman Serj Tankian sang "A whole race, genocide/Taken away all of our pride," and over the years the band has held several one-off "Souls" concerts to help raise awareness of the tragedy.

Now the group, whose members are all children of survivors, is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the genocide – in which Ottoman Turks began arresting and executing some 1.5 million Armenians, something that Turkey and several countries still refuse to recognize officially – with an international tour named "Wake Up the Souls." This will end on April 23rd, the day before Armenia commemorates the anniversary, with the group's very first performance in the country of their ancestors. The band plans on livestreaming the concert so people all over the world can watch.

System of a Down have also set up an interactive "heat map" on their website, allowing fans to learn about how different parts of the world have reacted to the genocide, including which countries have officially recognized it. Elsewhere, they host a call to action motivating fans to ask the Turkish president and parliament for recognition.

"Part of it is bringing attention to the fact that genocides are still happening, whether you use the word 'genocide,' 'holocaust' or 'humanitarian catastrophe,'" Tankian says. "None of that is changing. We want to be part of that change. We want the recognition of the first genocide of the 20th century to be a renewal of confidence that humanity can stop killing itself." He chuckles. "I say that, laughing, because obviously it's ridiculous."

Why have you decided to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide with a tour?

This is a recommitment and expansion of some of the work that we've been doing with the Armenian genocide for years. The whole "Souls" concept became a tour, and it's something that we all believe in because we're all children of survivors of the genocide. It's important for the recognition of the genocide as an end result, as well as attaining justice.

What are the steps toward attaining justice?

I think for us it's important for Turkey to know its own history in a truthful manner. It's not just about the genocide of the Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians, but what's going on now. There are no executable international agreements that have to do with stopping the genocide. Irrespective of a number of great U.N. bodies and even U.S.-based bodies in terms of genocide prevention, there's no binding resolution on any genocide or holocaust occurring. We still see them happening. I read in today's press that they discovered a mass grave in Deir Ezzor in Syria of ISIS massacres of this one tribe there, and it reminded me of all the bones that are under those sands in Deir Ezzor from the first genocide of the 20th century in the exact same place. If that's not symbolism, I don't know what is.

Your grandparents both lived through the Armenian genocide. What did they tell you about it?

They had these incredible, haunting stories of their survival. They were both toddlers, small children. My grandmother and her grandmother were saved by a Turkish mayor in a small city, as they were being marched through Turkey toward Syria, toward Deir Ezzor, the desert. They were saved in that way. My grandfather lost the majority of his family on the pogrom. He ended up in a number of different orphanages and ended up in Lebanon, in terms of finding a home there and growing up there. Just really heart-wrenching stories.

When my grandfather was still alive, we had them on camera for this film that we were part of called Screamers. It was a nice partial telling of his story, which was very fulfilling for me. We got a camera crew to tape 16 hours of these important stories that are disappearing because the survivors are almost all gone.

You've played in Armenia as a solo artist. How was that experience for you?

It was really amazing. The first time was with my band, the F.C.C., on my solo tour throughout Europe. We played a show in a beautiful, large theater. The second time, I played with an Armenian orchestra called the Opera Orchestra of Armenia. We played at the opening of a non-profit technology center called Tumo. There were about 11,000 people in this beautiful courtyard by a park, on a built stage overlooking this gorgeous gorge. It was truly amazing. A lot of youth, a lot of excitement. It was really very encouraging as to what the future of Armenia has to embrace.

Have you gotten a sense of how people there feel about the band doing this concert?

In Armenia, our status is unparalleled. I don't want to use any monikers like the Beatles or anything, but it's a unique kind of thing. So we want to go there and play for the people, which we've never done as System of a Down. It's quite exciting.

How is it that System of a Down have never played Armenia?

You know, that's a really good question. I don't have a direct answer to that. We've been asked to play, but it's never transpired either due to timing or the challenge of investment in infrastructure. It takes time for any of the large performance infrastructure to take place.

Has the band ever played in Turkey?

No. We were looking into Turkey as one of the dates of this Wake Up the Souls tour. We needed to get permission from the government, based on our outspokenness about the genocide and against the actions of [then-Turkish Prime Minister Recep] Erdoğan's government in particular. At the time, the new prime minister had just stepped in, which was the old foreign minister, and of course Erdoğan became president and left the prime minister's post. We waited a while, but we never got a response, so we planned the rest of the tour.

What is your relationship with Turkish fans like? It must be hard for you not to be able to play for them.

Totally. I personally want to go play there. Our relationship with them has been really cool. Years ago, someone planted things in the Turkish press trying to denounce us, I'm assuming an agent of the government, saying that we've done things that we've never done. So we put up something on our website saying that all of this is misinformation, please don't listen to it. It's all lies. Our fans were the ones that protected us in Turkey. They wrote to the editors of those newspapers who were planting this misinformation, this disinformation, and fought for us. Our jaws dropped. Here we have fans in Turkey that are protecting System of a Down. No society is unipolar.

Do you think Turkey will ever recognize the genocide?

I think it's very possible. I just read that there is a resolution for recognition for all past crimes, including the Armenian genocides – named specifically – that was just introduced to the Turkish parliament by a minority Kurdish MP, Sebahat Tuncel. Although I'm sure they don't have majority to pass it, that's an amazing sign not just of courage for her to bring that up, but that times could be changing, and that's a positive thing.

Speaking of times changing, there are Armenian celebrities drawing attention to the genocide lately.

Absolutely. For all the flak people give Kim Kardashian, I could say that with her yearly commemorations of the Armenian genocide and spreading that word, she's been valuable. She's been great.

She can raise a lot of awareness.

Absolutely. She's got more Twitter people than I do, that's for sure [laughs].

Shifting topics, it's been 10 years since the last System of a Down album. Are you guys talking about making a new one yet?

There has been talk, and we are going to play this tour, come back and we're going to see where we are. If we have songs that work for System, if I have them and Daron [Malakian, guitar] has them. The openness is there to work together, but we haven't made any particular plans that we can announce.

Have you personally written songs with System in mind?

I have a few that could apply, but I'm not sure until the time comes where I can actually play them for the guys and see if it's something that vibes off them.

Right now, I'm actually focusing on a film score. It's actually a really cool score, and it's for a film based on, again, the genocide. That's all I'm dealing with right now. It's called 1915. It's a very interesting drama that's actually shot in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theater, a very old and distinguished theater. It's a really, really interesting psychological thriller, modern story. It deals with denial and the psychological impacts of a genocide rather than the physical aspects of it.

Getting back to a new System album, I'm sure your fans are curious where you're at.

They will be the first to know. Fans will know before the press knows, I assure you.

Seth Avett, Jessica Lea Mayfield Prep Elliott Smith Covers Album

This March, Jessica Lea Mayfield and Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers will release an album of covers by late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. The album, titled Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith, is the product of three years of on-and-off collaborations between the two, and will feature twelve songs that span the entire discography of Smith’s career.

The album is a loving tribute that reflects the two singers' shared admiration for Smith, whose fragile, aching ballads and Beatles-influenced pop gems earned him an intense cult following throughout his career and in the decade-plus since his tragic death in 2003.

"It came about so naturally; there was nothing insincere about it," says Avett of the upcoming LP. "It only exists because me and Jessica love Elliott Smith's songs."

"Everyone who's an Elliot Smith fan takes the lyrics and relates them to themselves," adds Mayfield. "When Seth is singing, I forget for a moment that they're Elliott Smith songs, and when I'm singing them it's the same thing. I'm singing the lyrics as if it were my own song."

Mayfield has a long history with the Avett Brothers, serving as a frequent tour opener and providing the band with cover material of her own. Her upcoming record with Avett will be one of both artist's more bare-boned projects, highlighting the duo’s gentle harmonies and soft-spoken guitar playing.

The pair will be touring this spring in support of Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith, which is out March 17th.

Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley Lead Huge Shaky Boots Festival 2015 Lineup

The 2015 country-music concert event season seems destined for a solid success with the announcement of the new two-day Shaky Boots Festival near Atlanta, featuring appearances from Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Jason Isbell and several more big Nashville names.

The inaugural event will take place May 16-17 at the KSU Sports and Entertainment Park in Kennesaw, just north of the Georgia capital, and also include performances from Rascal Flatts, the Band Perry, Dwight Yoakam, Sara Evans, Kristian Bush, Joe Nichols, Old Crow Medicine Show, Justin Moore, Eli Young Band, Kip Moore, Jana Kramer, Josh Thompson and more than a dozen additional acts on three stages throughout the festival. Shaky Boots is the sister festival to Atlanta's Shaky Knees rock festival, which takes place one week prior to the debut event.

Two-day weekend passes for the festival will go on sale at www.shakyboots.com this Thursday, January 8th, starting at $169 with applicable service fees. VIP Ticket packages (at $499) will include access to exclusive lounges and viewing areas; catered lunches and dinners; complimentary beer; and access to private restrooms and cash liquor bars. Exclusive luxury suites are also available.

The Shaky Knees and Shaky Boots festivals make up one of three major rock and country cousin events in 2015. This is the ninth year that Coachella and Stagecoach will share the same California desert venue, separated by just one week in April. And the producers of Delaware's annual Firefly Festival have announced the new Big Barrel music festival, which boasts Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton as its first headliners this June.
